Ryuzo Fukuhara is a dancer and choreographer born in 1965 in Japan. He began his dance career after attending a Buto workshop led by Semi-maru of the Sankaijuku troupe in 1987. He joined Butoh Maijuku in 1991, working under Min Tanaka. Since 2000, Fukuhara has lived and worked in Europe.
In 2006 he won second prize in the solo dance category at the International Festival of Contemporary Dance on the Canary Islands. He was subsequently invited to teach a masterclass at the Arsenale della Danza during the Biennale di Venezia in 2010. His original creation Not.A.Void - which also included workshops, performances and shows – toured Japan and Slovenia in 2011.
He has performed and taught in Paris, Berlin, Prague and South Korea, and contributed to the Festival GuimaraesNocNoc as part of the European Capital of Culture celebrations in both Portugal and Slovenia.
In his classes, he often asks dancers to interpret the environment around them, pushing them to shed the weight of conventions and change the way they move and think. The resulting experience is an existential and physical journey for the performers.
