A story born from a balloon… A blend of circus arts and poetic clowning, a performance at once visual, visceral and theatrical, a curious character turning into a balloon… or vice versa.

On the stage, a huge yellow balloon rocks gently back and forth on a carpet. Suddenly it begins to move, rolling forward. Because it turns out that this balloon is far from empty… Gabriel Aguiar Romay presents an astonishing performance in which a character (part-acrobat, part-primate) grapples with balloons of all shapes and sizes. He doesn’t just play with the spheres, he becomes one with them, until it’s hard to tell where he ends and they begin. We thus see him emerging from a giant yellow balloon, like some primitive creature breaking out of its egg, before manipulating that same rubber shell and bouncing back into action. His body becomes an instrument, transforming and shape-shifting like a contortionist or some gradually disappearing Houdini.

Babylloon shines a light on the conflicting human impulses of possessiveness and destruction. What if the world was inside us, and redemption could only come from outside? A topsy-turvy world, like a Tex Avery cartoon, where anything is possible… Babylloon offers an innovative new take on the art of balloon performance, combining poetry, animal instinct, humanity and burlesque humour. Samuel Aguiar Romay opens the door on a world bursting with possibilities, where the “balloon” becomes an avatar of wealth, power, entertainment and weaponry.
