The idea of creating a new form of theatre first took shape in December 1989, when old systems were collapsing and the art world was confronted with the question of renovation. Director Anca Dana Florea and National Theatre actor Mihai Malaimare, both professors at IATC I. L. Caragiale Bucharest, decided that the time had come for a new beginning.
Their new theatre company was initially conceived as a private initiative, but they soon realised the slim chances of survival this entailed and decided to make Théâtre Masca a subsidised institution, dependent upon the Ministry of Culture.
